Inspired by the recent publication of the Naval Institute Press book, From Yeomanettes to Fighter Jets: A Century of Women in the U.S. Navy, by Randy C. Goguen, a retired Navy Commander, the event features a panel of distinguished female naval officers and seeks to offer a range of historical and present-day perspectives on women’s naval service.

Taylor Baldwin Kiland has written, co-authored, ghost-written, or edited eighteen books, including three about our nation’s Vietnam POWs: Unwavering: The Wives Who Fought to Ensure No Man is Left Behind, Lessons from the Hanoi Hilton: Six Characteristics of High-Performance Teams, and Open Doors: Vietnam POWs Thirty Years Later.
A former naval officer, Taylor spent twenty years in the private sector as a marketing communications professional before starting her writing career. She holds a master’s degree in marketing communications from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Southern California. Taylor’s work has been featured in NewYorkTimes.com, WashingtonPost.com, NBC Nightly News, CNN, C-SPAN, International Herald Tribune, Associated Press, military.com, and Naval Institute’s Proceedings, just to name a few.

Randy Carol Goguen served as an enlisted Marine and a Navy Yeoman in the reserves before she was commissioned as a naval intelligence officer in 1987. She retired at the rank of Commander in 2010 with more than 32 years of naval service. She holds a B.A. in international studies from the College of New Rochelle, an M.A. in international affairs from the University of Kentucky, and a Ph.D. in military history from Temple University. She was employed as the civilian historian for the Office of Naval Intelligence from 2002 until her retirement in 2022. She resides in Fairhaven, Maryland.
Rear Admiral Margaret “Peg” Klein, USN (Ret.) graduated from the Naval Academy with the second class of women, served for 36 years as a Naval Flight Officer, was the first woman to serve as the Commandant of Midshipmen and completed her career as Senior Advisor for Military Professionalism on the staff of the Secretary of Defense.
Her Navy service career includes being the first woman Chief of Staff, Commander, Carrier Strike Group EIGHT. She was Deputy and Commodore, Strategic Communications Wing ONE, TF-124.
Klein served in the White House Military Office, as a legislative fellow for former Senator Olympia Snowe, as a Squadron and Wing Commander, and as an Expeditionary Strike Group and Task Force Commander. In 2011, she became the Chief of Staff for U.S. Cyber Command after serving as the Operations Director for the Navy Network Warfare Command.
In 2014, she took on the role of the Secretary of Defense's Senior Advisor for Military Professionalism. RADM Klein worked with the Vice Chiefs and Service Under Secretaries to identify and share best practices in ethics, leadership development, and values-based decision-making across all branches of service.
After retirement, she served as the Dean, College of Leadership and Ethics, Naval War College, and is on the Board of Directors for the U.S. Naval Institute and the New England Center and Home for Veterans. She chairs the Board for the USNA Women’s Shared Interest Group, chaired the board of Notre Dame Academy, and. Rear Admiral Klein was a USNA Athletic and Scholarship Program trustee, and Naval Academy Leadership Conference keynote speaker.
Matice Wright-Springer is a senior vice president in Booz Allen's aerospace business. Her current areas of focus include the Joint All-Domain Command and Control Advanced Battle Management System; next-generation data solutions and analytics; organizational redesign; and digital transformation. Matice began her career in 1988, serving as the nation’s first African-American, female naval flight officer. She logged thousands of flight hours in both the EC-130 and the E-6 aircraft. After serving in the Navy, she was presidentially appointed to serve as a White House fellow at the Department of Treasury. She returned to government service a few years later as a member of the Senior Executive Service at the Department of Defense.
Springer’s private sector experience includes work as a defense analyst on large information technology programs with General Dynamics, a foreign military sales helicopter manager with Lockheed Martin, a senior strategist with L3 Harris, and as a technical director with ManTech International Corporation.
Springer earned a B.S. in physical sciences and general engineering from the United States Naval Academy. She holds an M.P.A. from Harvard University and an M.B.A. with a finance concentration from Johns Hopkins University. She currently serves on the United States Naval Academy’s Alumni Association’s Board of Trustees and is a member of the Academy’s Distinguished Graduate Award selection panel.
