Commander LaVopa commanded the USS Hurricane (PC-3) and also served as a DDG-1000 requirements officer at the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He is currently a Halsey Group Fellow at the U.S. Naval War College. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 2009 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He was commissioned through the Naval ROTC program. In 2015, he earned a master’s degree in business administration from Ohio University with a concentration in finance.
