Rear Admiral Richard F. Pittenger, U.S. Navy (Retired), joined the Naval Reserves, from which he was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1958. He then served for 32 years in surface ships, including a nine-month deployment to Vietnam in command of a minesweeper. Ashore, he served in ASW billets on the type commander and Chief of Naval Operations staffs.
